you can work on Bio fuels or design and analysis of individual components of automobiles like, suspension, gear box, tyres, engine components. Analysis can be of different types like testing structural integrity or thermal analysis for engine components etc. This is a very amount. There are so many other things one can do.

My suggestion would be to discuss with ur supervisor/ guide. We may suggest some projects but there should be required resources available at your college/university.

Then u can try doing design and analysis of parts like connecting rod (for heavy duty vehicles), leaf springs, etc....

Or else

try doing simulations of aerofoils, etc....

as the project should be done on mutual convenience....

1st U take a specific Project in Automobile ,then Design it i.e,-Dimensions,Material Selection processes etc..by using "Design-Soft-wares" like 'CAD' or 'CATIA' & sharing with ur Group members,Skilled persons & Guide ............also make it's 'Proto-Type'.................@

You should study papers about HCCI (Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition), bio fuel diesel and Bio fuel diesel HCCI

You can also see the papers on biodiesel production from non edible oils and their combustion characteristics.

Try some new alternative fuels or else check latest verticals and journals of automobi

Try to test the engine and compare the performance of the engine using bio fuels.

Try some design modifications. Do analysis with some simulating software & validate the results empirically , analytically or qualitatively with some literature back up.

Try to do the project @ some reputed institution so as to gain acceptance during interviews. Pls dont try to build some fascinating prototypes. It is utter waste of money n time. Actually engineers r meant 4 designing.
