Log transformation of a variable sometimes allows for a better interpretation of the regression coefficients. E.g. in time-series data, log-differencing the variables implies converting it to growth rates. In cross-section data, log transformation allows the interpretation of the coefficients in terms of elasticities or semi-elasticities. Whether or not it is appropriate to perform a log transformation depends on the context and the research question.
To add to Brahma's answer there, Log transformation can also help reduce variability in data. Some variables may show outliers, now with log transformation the distribution of the variable will be rather smooth and close to a normal distribution.
