Hello, I am looking for inexpensive hardware options for fixation monitoring during a PC-based cognitive experiment. The area that participants should not look outside of is rather small (2 cm radius). I am new to eye-tracking, so would greatly appreciate some recommendations. For example, can this precision of gaze monitoring be achieved even with a mere webcam?

There are many discussions about low-cost eye-trackers (cheap ones and web-cam based, etc.) in the eye-tracking community. You can find some articles on the internet that compared them, like this one:

Generally its all about the quality of the eye-movement data at the end and what you want to get our of the using eye-tracking in your study.
As the low-cost eye-tracker, we used Tobii 4C but had to pay for the specific license that allows us to write research papers! the device itself is cheap but with the permission its getting more expensive.
Thank you Peyman, Tobii 4C is a really interesting tip! How did you synchronize the device with your experiment - did you write a script from scratch, or does Tobii come with some code that can be readily applied? Would you recommend this to someone who is not particularly experienced in programming?
I developed the whole experiment from scratch . There is SDK for developing eye-based interactions, record fixations, etc. which I integrated to the program in .NET framework. There are also some challenges on data analysis since there is no software offered by Tobii to analysis Tobii 4C data. Therefore, I do not suggest to use it if you do not experience on programming.

The Tobii Pro X3-120 is a nice eye-tracker (i.e., many great features, user-friendly, etc.)! Also, the company offers an array of online resources and excellent tech support services.

Hi Emy S. Agren , how are you collecting data from the 4C? My understanding was that the data is locked to users / not available for research purposes.

The Tobii Pro X3-120 would be very helpful and has a user friendly way of handling the eye tracking equipment.
I checked this blog https://imotions.com/blog/eye-tracker-prices/ and see 3 Varjo devices on the list. With Varje we had a very bad experience, the company does not help us with questions... probably they are good for product development but not for measuring fine eye movements. Sorry for the negative review.
You can access data from the Tobii 4C and 5 trackers using their SDK. You do have access to all sorts of data, however, you are not supposed to use the data for publication or for manipulation inside the application you are creating. For that you need to "unlock" the device. This will give you more access and keep legal.
It really depends on what data you need and what you are going to do with it.
