I am confused and reached the stage of intellectual confusion. I chose any questions for the personal interview to research a MBA with an exploratory approach and primary qualitative data that can be extracted through one data collection tool, which is the semi-structured interview, or unstructured, given that the participants are mostly a group of work friends. And the profession in other companies, these companies are under research and exploration to clarify the main topic, which is (aligning social media with business strategy, and showing the impact on organizational performance) in the industrial sector, heavy equipment companies and heavy spare parts. The question is: Are there good and specific sample questions for the semi-structured or unstructured interview, these questions express exploratory research and qualitative data with deductive or inductive results? Is it preferable that the questions be closed according to specific options for answering? Or would they prefer to be open and leave the door wide open for them to answer freely?
Exploratory research is used when a topic or an issue is new, or when problems are at a preliminary stage, and so data is difficult to collect; therefore, the emphasis must be on gaining insight and familiarity to test the feasibility of undertaking a more extensive study and establish an understanding of how to subsequently proceed in future. With higher-order, open, and divergent questioning that challenges learning (i.e., why, what, how), qualitative inquiry seeks to discover patterns in behaviors or phenomena from qualitative data (i.e., data in the form of words), and so helps develop ideas or hypotheses for subsequent quantitative research.
The interview is an important data gathering technique of exploratory research and can rest on both unstructured and semi-structured interviews. To note, however, unstructured interviews are most appropriate when the researcher does not know enough about a phenomenon to ask relevant questions. Conversely, semi-structured interviews acknowledge that participants define the world in unique ways and allow the researcher to engage with emerging worldviews and new ideas on a topic. Highly structured interviews are used primarily for surveys and, from preconceived notions and assumptions that respondents share a common vocabulary, do not elicit perspectives or understandings of the world.
