In my humble opinion, a good research design in educational intervention is when there is a smaller sample of students (e.g. 30) & when the duration is less (e.g. 16 weeks which are normally equivalent to a semester). I did nearly that by an intervention in a scientific subject in 1976 as part of my Diploma degree in education (including monitoring attitudes & attaching original exam papers & essays of my young school students to the thesis). The UNESCO committee then awarded me an excellent grade & I was promoted to category "A" school teacher with instant increase in monthly salary!
Note that I have become involved, afterwards, in university teaching but the education program benefited a lot in this respect.
You think they are in same age, same context and characteristic but their personality and motivation surely not the same.
If I were you I would examine their approach towards the learning or the most interesting research topic could be to analyse how different teaching strategies or tools can play its role in different groups. Moreover, evolution of group dynamis can also be investigated.
