I want some info about current problems in industry working with PLC and SCADA. What problems do you face during working with them?
I want to start research in this field of industrial automation. Hence, right now I am in phase of information gathering.

It should be realized here that industries have a choice of SCDA over PLC today. And, it apppears many industries prefer SCADA systems over PLC due to varied advantages.
The hottest topic of today in this field is to enforce the usage of one common communication standard to avoid the necessity of applying different software interfaces and support the rapid application development. It is also because of other information systems which are on a higher level than the SCADA (according to the hierarchical model of control and information systems) e.g. ERP etc. So, these systems are heading to overall integration using more and more technologies, which are more common in the internet environment. This fact brings a lot of issues because of the handling of the real time, a vast amount of data with relatively small acquisition period, decentralization of control functions even into sensors and actuators etc. And one of the biggest issues is cyber security and how to effectively keep the system secure also in accordance with mentioned problems, because encryption means higher demands on the parts of the control system.
So, in my opinion it is a very wide area, in which you can find a lot of problems to solve.
I think you should answer to yourself a few simple questions to reduce the research area e.g. Do you want to deal with existing applications or with new trends? Hardware or software? Communication protocol or security? etc.
Try to search topics about: OPC UA, cyber-physical systems, industry 4.0, digital factory, PKI

One problem you need to solve is to select the appropiated connectivity and network infrastructure for allowing the users to get the specific information on real time according to the information level every department has in the pyramid of information established for the monitoring and control of the particular industry.
