Dear Olga, predatory publishing is increasing day by day. We must take a strong action against them. Further, I want to avoid the citation of the papers that published in predatory journals as a reaction to stop predatory publishing business. Otherwise, the future of academia is full of challenges. Dear Olga, it is not so easy to make a list of objective criteria to define predatory publishing. Surely, the first thing that comes to mind would be a company that accepts papers within a few days, obviously without double blind peer review, for the sole purpose of making money out of the work of scholars.

However, a lot of reputable companies also make a lot of money out of the work of scholars, even though their publications are more academic. I think Teaching and Teacher Education (SSCI) is a great journal and I am quite proud they published my paper, but I also know that people who would like to read it are "invited" to pay almost 20 US dollars. That's a lot of money for just one paper. If researchers do not have access to papers through institutional library subscription, how can they write a literature review? Moreover, it is incredible that all these companies sell our papers without giving us anything in return. Imagine that writers would publish books and receive no royalties at all...

In the end, frankly, the best way to know if a journal is serious is to actually read it. Do not listen too much to what other people say. Make your own opinion. It think it shows when papers are well written and well edited.

Predatory publishers lure authors with promises of quick and easy publication. They have bogus journals that offer guaranteed publication, but charge exorbitant publication fees or article processing charges from the authors. These journals do not have a proper quality control or peer review process and engage in a lot of deceptive practices. Publishing in such dubious journals can be damaging for a researcher’s career as it creates an impression that the author either does not know the reputable journals in the field, or, worse, that the author is using the quick and easy route to get publications rather than putting in the effort required to get published in a high quality journal.

Jeffrey Beall’s list is undoubtedly the largest database of predatory journals and publishers; however, the list has also received a lot of criticism lately, and may not be a comprehensive authoritative source.  However, it  can be a good starting point to check journals that seem suspicious. Beall has also put together some Criteria for Determining Predatory Open-Access Publishers.

The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) also has a document entitled "Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing" that can help authors assess the credibility of a journal before they submit their articles.
