Does anyone know anything about a organization/corporate/company (what is it?) called "scientific federation " (SF), which is organizing conferences/meetings across the globe in various (mostly medical) disciplines (like i.e. World summit on Toxicology)
Do you allready have any experience with such meetings?
Has anyone actually been to one of these conferences?
see also this blog dealing with the same subject:
http://flakyc.blogspot.com/2017/01/scientific-federation-sf.html
Thanks Antonio!
Maybe someone else knows who they really are.
In fact I was surprised, because (unlike many other similar everyday invitations), those were related to my research interests and orientated on my normal journey radius (not placed. on another end of the world).
Also the conferences appear to be real, a friend has send me a blog on them (participants describe their experiences): http://flakyc.blogspot.com/2017/01/scientific-federation-sf.html

I opined that in entire world, majority of the so called scientific federations are professional. They plan for the conference, seminar, symposium etc. year around and earn money from the same. Some of them invite the bio-data of the scientists of their respective field and asked to pay money to award them for their so called Life Time Achievement Award and what you want from these so called federation/association/organization etc. So I firmly opined that these (majority) so called federations are nothing but money making factory to make scientific community foolish.
According to the comments in the blog, of people who have attended these events, everything seems to indicate that they are using scientists as useful idiots for them to make money in the organization of bad quality events to defraud people.
I would like to share an interesting link with you, related to the subject:

Hi!
Actually, last year I accidentally signed up for one of Scientific Federation's conferences - dedicated to material science. My impression was clear: Although all contributing scientist where serious and presented interesting results, the organizer is doing this for revenue, not for science. I came to suspect this before going. However, this happened after having payed the fee, and their refund policy is not among the most liberal ones ...
Actually, I wrote a piece about the experience, however in Norwegian:
https://forskning.no/meninger/kronikk/2017/10/slik-endte-eg-opp-pa-ein-userios-konferanse
Just to be clear: Scientific Federation is not a serious organization, it certainly belong to the "predatory" category.

Dear Lygia Therese Budnik,
Scientific Federation is already listed on the Dolos list, a new list of predatory publishers and journals:

New business model: distributing of electronic “reprints”
There is an interesting new business model from so called “Science Mailer Team“. They are offering to mail around the world your non-open access publication for 150 Eur. Planning to flood thousands of email accounts with your publication and at the same time to send around a publication with restricted access from the publisher.
You maybe received this allready: “We can distribute electronic 'reprints' of your (they name one of your publications, which are NOT open access) paper (note which is not open access) and/or any other articles of your choice to thousands of scientists in your field for a very reasonable amount (150 Euros in total). You can go even further: You can distribute an article and invite the recipients to join you in a discussion forum on the topic in ResearchGate”
Lygia Therese Budnik, Many thanks for this important awareness discussion and sharing recent updates on such predatory conferences and publishing. I didn't know about alot of them.

Dear Peter Breuer,
The reasons for adding DOAJ are explained here:

This is the only one at the moment but we are waiting for some answers to add more. You are naturally free to report others. My team will take care of all requests.

So, Don't let yourself be fooled! But since (most of) you all are experienced and warned for a while / for some time, I am allowed to assume.......you know what is going on....
Best regards, W.H.M.
Dear Peter Breuer,
Indeed, Indian Journal of Public Health has been added for their questionable editorial board and their lack of financial transparency. The journal had been contacted, but refused to provide the requested information. Then we examined Medknow and Wolters Kluwer and decided, in accordance with the rules of the Dolos list, to add them, having considered that these problems were recurrent for this publisher. For example, they have repeatedly used names of researchers in their editorial boards without their agreement.
If you want to submit another publisher or journal to the Dolos list, do not hesitate to do it as stated in the Dolos list rules:
https://www.professeur-alexandre-georges.info/operation
My team will examine your requests with a great attention.
Best regards,
Alexandre.
Dear Peter Breuer,
I understand your request.
First, please refer to the preamble, § 4 of the operation section of the Dolos list (https://www.professeur-alexandre-georges.info/operation):
"The Dolos list will never have to justify itself to anyone in any case, unless the interests of justice so require, as in the framework of, for example, a procedure initiated by the Dolos list team. The collected evidence serves only to make a decision. Justification requests will therefore never be processed, regardless of the originator of this request, so that they do not delay the team's work."
This rule is especially made to avoid losing too much time in justifications. Evidence is only for analysis. It's up to researchers to decide whether they can trust us or not. We only justify ourselves for more important files (like https://www.professeur-alexandre-georges.info/tf-file-translation).
Then, according to the "Operation and rules" part introducing the Dolos list on its main page (https://www.professeur-alexandre-georges.info/dolos-list):
"For an element to be added, it is necessary that it has committed one of the aforementioned faults in the 6 years preceding its examination."
For the moment, this rule is more a principle that my team follows, but it is not integrated in the section operation, in order to possibly be able to extend this period without having to change the strict rules. This was of course not necessary for IJPH.
Faults leading to an addition are indicated in part II, subpart 1 of the operation section. Medknow's Indian Journals of Public Health meets the conditions set out in sections A, B, C, and D of part II, subpart 1. However, if Medknow owns IJPH, it is responsible for it. This is the same for Wolters Kluwer (still under study) who owns Medknow. All conditions are strictly met. Medknow and IJPH are well predatory and pseudoscientific.
In addition, IJPH had the opportunity to respond during our comprehensive investigation, the conditions of which are set out in Part II, Subpart 2, Section D, subsection a:
"In order to carry out the examination, the office may address a series of questions to the publisher or the journal, which will be the result of questions that arose during the preliminary inquiry. Without answer, the office will be based on its doubts and the other elements."
IJPH refused to answer our questions.
Finally, be aware that, as indicated on the main page of the Dolos list:
"Important Note: A researcher who publishes in a pseudoscientific journal is not necessarily incompetent. A journal can be initially serious and become predatory. In addition, it is often the case that well-established researchers trust this kind of journals, because of their excessive speed or lack of knowledge of the world of predatory publishing. Researchers are the victims of this sector and some high quality papers do not have the visibility due to them because of a publication in a bad journal. If you are a PhD student and the funding for your publication has been suspended because of a submission to a predatory journal - because it has already happened, do not hesitate to show this message."
Best regards,
Alexandre.
Dear Peter Breuer,
I appreciate your interest in the Dolos list, but it would be better if you read the entire Dolos list operation section (https://www.professeur-alexandre-georges.info/operation) before asking me questions. As you will see, response times are 7 days. IJPH was contacted on 09/09/2018 and still has not responded.
Again, my office only provides evidence for the most important files. These subjects are covered in the Dolos list statements section (https://www.professeur-alexandre-georges.info/statements).
For the other additions to the list, it's simply inconceivable. For each publisher or journal, it would not be a lot of time, but if you do it for all journals, publishers, organizations, and newspapers listed on the Dolos list, it represents an extravagant time cost (just look at its length), while already have a team to manage the list as it is organized. As a reminder, I am alone to finance the Dolos list (for reasons of neutrality and independence), which means that every time I employ someone for the list, funds will come out of my pocket all months to pay him. I do not know if you realize what that means. I prefer to follow the current operation and let the researchers check when they have doubts on a minor element on the list.
The Dolos list has an operation that does not leave office members express their personal points of view. My team follows a specific procedure to examine each case. If you do not trust our integrity and honesty, nothing forces you to follow the Dolos list recommandations. But I will not make an exception in our operation and our priorities and Medknow will be described as a predatory publisher as long as it remains predatory. The withdrawal procedures are explained in the operation section. Now it's up to them to provide explanations, not the Dolos list.
I am sorry for your work, but you are not alone in this situation. Many well-established researchers have been scammed by these companies.
Best regards,
Alexandre.
I have seen an email coming from them but I have always treated it as spam

on the "Negative Effects of “Predatory” Journals on Global Health Research" “Predatory journals (PJ) exploit the open-access model promising high acceptance rate and fast track publishing without proper peer review. At minimum, PJ are eroding the credibility of the scientific literature in the health sciences as they actually boost the propagation of errors. In this article, we identify issues with PJ and provide several responses, from international and interdisciplinary perspectives in health sciences. Authors, particularly researchers with limited previous experience with international publications, need to be careful when considering potential journals for submission, due to the current existence of large numbers of PJ. Universities around the world, particularly in developing countries, might develop strategies to discourage their researchers from submitting manuscripts to PJ or serving as members of their editorial committees.” https://www.researchgate.net/project/ETHICAL-AND-QUESTIONABLE-PRACTICES-IN-RESEARCH-AND-PUBLISHING

(Quote: ) "I am going to quote a recent Huffington Post article rather extensively today: “In this post, we hope to raise awareness about the growing menace of bogus conferences, organized by predatory publishers as well as specialized conference groups such as BIT Congress Inc, Conference Series Ltd, Event Series (both owned by OMICS International), PSC Conference and many others. These groups, often based out of China and India, run vanity conferences on nearly every conceivable topic. Unwary researchers fall prey to these seemingly "prestigious" speaking opportunities and pay the high registration fee to attend, as well as the high cost of travel and lodging. These conferences make money through registration fees that are bundled with charges for the hotel, meals, program materials, ground transportation and other hidden charges (e.g. sightseeing tours)." Dear colleagues,
The section of the Dolos list dedicated to the organizers of doubtful or fake conferences has been opened:
https://www.professeur-alexandre-georges.info/dolos-list
Its filling is however slow, because of certain methods of verification sometimes requiring to exchange with universities, in particular when the organizer under investigation wants to organize a conference within a faculty or claims to be affiliated with a university.
The section is still being filled, but do not hesitate to continue submitting new suggestions to my team, following the usual procedure.
In addition, the other sections were updated yesterday. This update is rather voluminous, because of the holidays which delayed its elaboration and new activities of the Dolos list (free services to researchers, institutions, and administrations):

Best regards,
Alexandre.
If Scientific Federation (SF) refers to me as Distinguish Professor (instead of a student) and invites me for a plenary talk based on my prominentcy and proficientcy in the field of Agriculture and Horticulture (never publish in that field), then SF is clearly a predatory one.
Dear Benjamín Moreira-Grez , they love students who let them pet you (or your face....(:-)).
Best regards, Wolfgang H.M.
Thank you Wolfgang to pointing this. This is important to notice this before you lose your time and money.......
Today I was invited by Scientific Federation to be an Organizing Committe Member for a conference on applied chemistry, a subject I know almost nothing about. I infer this must be a mass mailing to people whom they have not bothered to assess. Draw your own conclusions.
Hi all, I recently had the experience of googling myself (as part of a dinner table conversation) and found my name & image listed as a speaker for the global conference on nursing & healthcare management website: https://nursingconference-auroragroup.com/eloquent-speakers.php
It’s an ’aurora group’ conference
I had some brief interaction with them many months ago (curiosity), but there has been no further contact and no confirmation that I would attend from my end- I honestly had forgotten about it. Is this a legitimate conference and worth looking presenting at, or is this a scam?
@ Gemma: I was asked to become a chair of a conference (at least it was more or less in my subject area), but would had no influence either on a program, nor the invited speaker. I really do not know, if those organizers have ever realized that any kind of a scientific conference should be organized by scientists and scientific societies, not by the back office! The later should provide only support, not the scientific program.
Thanks St Schulz , the first thing I did was to contact my boss to let them know it wasn't an authorised use of my image/name. I may need to get our relevant teams onto it. It is a very unsettling experience.
I am no longer listed on that website, and the conference dates were allegedly moved to May 2020. Small win :)
@ Gemma: this is in fact a great success. Normally it is difficult to reach this
Hi all, I received the following message via my LinkedIn account from the so-called scientific federation group. I knew it was a scam the moment I read the message - the quality, the horrible website, the email provided at the end of the mail, etc. It is sad that such groups exist, and nothing has been done yet by genuine scientific organization to put them out of business.

That is one of the "good signs" [Increasing awareness about that scurge for unexperienced academians and 'young' researchers looking for acceptation / recognition / appreciation of their work] with regard to this ( >> predatory, flaky, dubious, unhonest, bogus, fraudulent, deceptive, big business, money easily acquired).
As one of the minor Co-authors in / of Project https://www.researchgate.net/project/ETHICAL-AND-QUESTIONABLE-PRACTICES-IN-RESEARCH-AND-PUBLISHING
I would like to add here frankly but seriously again:
Just to recapitulate:
Everybody/Anybody can choose (even if sometimes starry-eyed) to attend ANY Conference offered by ANYbody or can submit a manuscript for publication ...as being INFORMED or INVITED by unsolicited [SPAM] E-Mail(s), or other sources set up or found in the WWW.
If you want to spend money on your own for a virtual "Congress-participation" ('vacation' or 'Sight-Seeing' as of Corona-Pandemia 99% isn't possible any more) do so.... or - preferentially - invest your money in joining an (International or National) Association or Society representing the field of your (academic) interest, research etc.
There might be not only one choice for Annual Meetings / Conferences those Societies / Associations organise and prepare - sometimes also together with 'Sister/Brother?'-Societies...Such might be more productive than an advertised WORLD/GLOBAL CONFERENCE of.....held/hosted in a small seminar / lecture room rented in a Hotel located at a / the Campus (turning out to be only located in the vicinity) of a renowned University...
'Temptation is great'...
since "they"(=these spamming guys) obviously ==>KNOW all about your previous 'outstanding' and eminent contribution to the academic and scientific community [ i.e., using search algorithms 'crawling' over new publications posted in the web and sending - then - automated 'personal invitations', presenting as and trying to convince you 'overfriendly' that you should follow their invitation ] .....
Information on the "character" of such "invitations" is - for sure - available more than hundredfold....(this number only an estimation! )
Much information can be found in several Q/A in ResearchGate...[one needs just to perform a 'search in 'PUBLICATIONS or QUESTIONS / SEARCH ResearchGate with the appropriate keyword(s)] [(potential keywords e.g.: >> unsolicited SPAM E-Mail Invitation 'PREDATORY' vs. 'REAL' Conference Checklist Publish* Journal . . .
Dear Isam Alkhalifawi , honestly:
If you - with your 'invitation' :
" You can send your research to the Toxicology Conference" wanted to refer to Toxicology Webinars 2020 | Toxicology Conferences 2020 ... as advertised and 'hosted' by www.conferenceseries.com
[-https://www.conferenceseries.com/toxicology-meetings;
--https://globaltoxicology.conferenceseries.com/;
--https://waset.org/toxicology-conferences;
--https://europe.toxicologyconferences.com/;
https://pharmacology.pharmaceuticalconferences.com/events-list/toxicology;
(NB: all websites one and the same 'organizer'! putting out their feelers / fishing net in any direction)
You might find further -for them unwanted - 'valuable' information about that organisation just searching for them via 'SEARCH' function in ResearchGate Q/A, via Google or any other Search engine...
Suchor similar applies also for:

Stemming the rising tide of predatory journals and conferences: A selective review of literature
The paper highlights the prevalence of predatory journals and conferences that damage science and research across all knowledge branches. They are characterized by rapid acceptance and publication, aggressive email marketing, lack of quality control, and charge hefty Article Processing Charges (APC) (for journal articles) and registration fees (for conference papers) from the authors. They thrive on the ignorance and naivety of early-stage, inexperienced, ambitious, and ingenuous researchers who have to adhere to publications’ mandatory institutional requirements. Unfortunately, the senior researchers, despite knowing the downsides, publish, and present their research findings in predatory journals and conferences. The paper recommends that regulatory and funding bodies ensure that no credit or funding is given to publish and present in predatory journals and conferences. Libraries have a significant role to play – they should spread awareness among the researchers about the detrimental effect of fake publishing and conferencing; educate researchers about how to differentiate between bogus, fake journals, conferences, and the genuine ones...

Thank you for this valuable paper. Predatory conferences and journals hurt the entire scientific community! Spread the word!
The continuous growth of Predatory Journals is one of the most damaging trends in scientific communication since peer-reviewed scientific journals were established by the Royal Society a few centuries ago . In our POST -TRUTH age of fake news , reality denial and and science denialism that refuses to accept the validity of established scientific evidence , combatting predatory journals and conferences has become a vital necessity if we want science and technology to help preserve our blue planet together with its inhabitants who have nowhere else to go .
Dear Lygia Therese Budnik, this is fine article which was published this month.
Predatory Conferences: What Are the Signs?
Like predatory journals, predatory conferences are a growing part of the academic land-scape, but unlike their journal counterparts, to date predatory conferences have not been extensively investigated, and many unanswered questions about their workings exist. From a positive ethics perspective, a more complete understanding of predatory conferences is desirable, as it can support researchers in making ethically appropriate choices about con-ference attendance. Ten predatory conference organisations were the focus of this study. The investigation first set out to identify and document the attributes of such conferences. They were then analysed to understand which attributes can most easily and reliably be used to distinguish them from legitimate conferences. A tool to assist prospective par-ticipants is introduced. The implications for positive ethics, in terms of making decisions about conference attendance, are discussed... Predatory Conferences: What Are the Signs?. Dear Salem Y Mohamed , this is fine comment on Frontiers.
The Lausanne-based publishing house Frontiers, founded by the neuroscientists Henry and Kamila Markram, has been recently added to the Beall’s List of potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers...
Frontiers is quite popular with many scientists and research organisations. How can a publisher which helped pioneer such innovations as open access and name-signed peer review, have come to this?
https://forbetterscience.com/2015/10/28/is-frontiers-a-potential-predatory-publisher/
Dear Salem Y Mohamed ,
It depends on which Frontiers you talk about. As indicated by Ljubomir Jacić “Frontiers Media SA” (https://www.frontiersin.org/) is a well reputed publisher dedicated to open access journals. Personally, I think this is the best example that the Beall’s list (https://beallslist.net/ ) is not flawless.
However, if you mean “Frontiers Meetings (FM)” (https://frontiersmeetings.com/) then be careful:
-It is mentioned in the list of questionable conferences https://libguides.caltech.edu/c.php?g=512665&p=3503029
-Their (FM) journals are published by FM publishers (https://fmpublishers.org/) a publisher mentioned in the updated version of the Beall’s list (https://beallslist.net/#update ). A ‘judgement’ where I think ‘the Beall’s list’ is right.
This one you better avoid.
Best regards.

Academic librarians and their role in disseminating accurate knowledge and information about the gray zone in predatory publishing
“Predatory” publishing is a non-binary academic phenomenon, but personal and professional biases may influence the criteria used to create associated blacklists and whitelists. Academic librarians, as scholarly communicators, play an essential role in transmitting accurate information about “predatory” publishing to students, staff, funders, university management and the public. In this paper, lessons are drawn from the published literature to offer advice to academic librarians about the gray zone in predatory publishing to avoid select misinformation pitfalls...

Preparing to publish a research output can be daunting, especially if it is for the first time. Lorraine Estelle describes the organisation's approach in tackling predatory publishing by raising awareness among librarians and researchers and giving them the tools that they need to make an educated choice on which publishing venue is the most appropriate for their work. Think.Check.Submit. encourages researchers to look out for the characteristics displayed by predatory publishers and use the checklist of questions to evaluate publishers when considering where to submit their research...

The ‘publish or perish’ race among researchers force at least some of them to opt for quick outletsfor publication, making them fall into the trap of predatory journals. With a strong base and historyof research institutions and journals, the present study explores grooming a reasonable number ofquality journals in India to tackle the menace of predatory pub lishing. The data presented are col-lected from different sources to work out the approximate minimum number of quality journals thatcan be strengthened using state-of-the-art technology solutions as well as internationally competi-tive journal editorial, review and pu blishing procedures. It is difficul t to deal with the commercialinterests of predatory publishers through academic safeguards alone. However, their negative im-pact can be contained through a se t of action plans by various stakeholders, such as sensitizingauthors about the perils of predatory publishing, training new authors about the nuances of aca-demic publishing to facilitate their manuscripts getting accepted in good j ournals, strengtheningIndian journals to publish more quality papers, etc. (5) (PDF) Disrupting predatory journals. Contamination by citations: References to predatory journals in the peer-reviewed marketing literature...
Predatory publishing is a growing and global issue infecting all scientific domains. Predatory publishers create counterfeit, not (properly) peer-reviewed journals to exploit the Open Access model in which the author pays. The plethora of predatory marketing journals along with the sophisticated deceptive practices of their publishers may create total confusion. One of the many highly likely risks of that confusion is when peer-reviewed, prestigious marketing journals cite these pseudo-marketing journals. This phenomenon is called citation contamination. This study aims to investigate the extent of citation contamination in the peer-reviewed marketing literature...

For over a decade, predatory publishers, journals and conferences have continuously menaced the research community, preying on its resources, and diminishing the general trust in science, becoming an important research topic. Previous studies have focused on identifying their characteristics, in order to increase the academic awareness and help researchers not becoming a prey. At the same time, predatory publishers diversified their strategies; the academic community developed disparate reactions, which determined more and diverse predatory strategies, aimed at luring and deceiving the scientists...
While the process is still ongoing, the present research is aimed at exposing the most extreme predation strategies, in an effort to make the line separating honest and predatory journals more traceable...

Predatory Conferences: A Lesser-known (But No Less Dangerous) Predatory Publishing Scam
The amount of illegitimate science that’s presented at predatory conferences can be truly frightening. Predatory conferences, also called ‘vanity conferences’, are nothing new, and curious researchers have long since wondered how far they can push the envelope. In 2005, three graduate students submitted an entirely nonsensical paper to a predatory conference—and were accepted. Since then, many researchers have taken up the challenge of testing the validity of conferences through increasingly nonsensical submissions. Though the resulting ‘publications’ can be humorous, their implications are anything but. Besides the validity of the science, however, there are a few other ways that participating in a predatory conference can be harmful:

This paper established that predatory publishing has great consequences in the spread of misinformation and disinformation amongst academicians and Learners in Developing Countries. Some of the reasons that necessitate the increase in predatory publishing in developing countries are; the lack of proper policies or guidance on where research articles should or should not be published, the failure to embrace open access initiatives for visibility and dissemination of research outputs so as to discourage academic malpractice and unethical behaviors, lack of funds, poor or limited information literacy among other factors...
