I have seen many professors that rely entirely on power point presentations for teaching. My experience teaching courses in Electrical Engineering shows that students appreciate it more when I also write on the board and take the time to explain the solutions and have an active discussion with them. Student appreciation is clearly shown on student course evaluations.
Could it be that for theoretical courses then power point presentations simplify the material whereas for engineering courses writing and explaining the detailed solution on the board makes it more understandable to students?

I think, and it is supported by my teaching expeirence in ballistics, that writing on the board and step by step explaining is more understandable to students. This approach is also appreciated by students.

In general, it depends on the students, on the level of difficulty of the issue you are teaching and if you have or not assigned books/study material.
For long courses with book assigned I used to teach on board explaining step by step difficult concepts, trying to mimic the book so the students could find it "familiar" when studying it (and this was very appreciated)
While, for shorter (simpler) courses where you do not have standard books/material, you are free and you can use successfully power points.

Both approaches are important, but theoretical formalism is educated using white/blackboards.
I think it is because you are actively doing something when writing on the board - motion, colour, a message evolving. They also know it is coming from you, and not something you found on the internet the night before.
