I am performing a simple close range photogrammetry test and comparing outcomes of photogrammetry tools such as VisualSFM, Meshroom, Colmap etc.
Kindly advice, what post evaluation tests/ criteria (such as point cloud density) can be performed for comparison of point clouds from various photogrammetry tools and what tools/ software can assist in such evaluation (such as CloudCompare, Matlab) ?.
Test Objects = such as water bottle, small objects etc.

I did a similar research some time ago, where I used a laser scan derived-mesh model as reference with which to compare the results of some photogrammetric software and/or techniques. Alternately, you can also create an average surface mesh from all your photogrammetric point clouds to use as a reference.
I used the Mesh-2-Cloud and M3C2 tools in CloudCompare to generate a Gaussian curve of the error between my reference and compared point clouds. From the Gaussian curve you can then infer average error and standard deviation with regards to a common reference, thus deducing the quality of each software.
You should be careful when comparing photogrammetric point cloud density because it would depend on the settings/parameters you used for each software.

I would sugest you to evaluate:
- Diferences between the 3D clouds using M3C2 tool built in the Cloudcompare software. This would allow you to spot deformation and other diferences among them.
- I would build a surface from the point cloud (you can use meshlab for that) and evaluate the distance between the surface and the point cloud. This would allow you o observe the dispersion of points close to the projected surface.
- Number of discontinuits in the point cloud if there is any.
