Effect of corona virus as of noe is lower demand. Countries having problems in meeting the peak load in summer and resort to power cuts it may not be a big issue. However as pointed out by Neethu Elizabeth Michael it will have an effect on utilisation of clean energy.

Indian people switched off light on 5th April at 9PM for 9 minutes on the call of Honorable PM to show the solidarity against the fight to corona pandemeic by

lighting the lamp, torch or candle. Earlier there were discussions of grid failure and people fear about blackout in this present situation.

The power system operation and corporation (POSOCO) has effectively made the strategy to do this and did it successfully utilizing hydroelectric plant, thermal, Gas and wind. The frequency went over 50 Hz till 50.25 at 9:09 PM and then it return back when people again switched on the lights. A total dip in load demand was 30 GW (approx) out of which 17 GW reduced from hydroelectric plant, 7 GW by thermal, 2 GW by gas turbine and 2 GW reducing the WTG.

Following the switching off the light after 9 PM the load demand ramped down and the frequency shoots up to 50.25 Hz and voltage rise till 236 Volts. After 9:10 PM the load demand again ramped up and again the frquency and voltage gradually returns back to nominal value. The generating units who were reduced their generation have increased their generation to fullfill the demand.

This shows the strong nature of Indian Grid and also the capability of our power companies employ.

Actually yes, and this is a very important question only for India but for all world. the answer should lead us to try to modify and convert our power networks from conventional to smart grid and try to develop all auxiliary technologies.
