1. More modification of existing grades/types than synthesis of new polymers (the latter only in niche applications)
2. Large manufacturers tend to produce basic grades and independent compounders satisfy the requirements of minor customers. Formulation will be come important, but development hampered by REACh and other market-protecting measures.
3. Slow penetration of renewable resource polymers into bigger markets
4. Farther future: gradual return to long life structrual materials to reduce weight and increased use of natural resources (including polymers)

Myself doing research in biomimetic taste sensor using polymer membrane with Prof. Basudam Adhikari, Polymer Division, Materials science Centre, IIT Kharagpur, India. And we found that, membrane can detect the taste (five basic) very below than human threshold limit.
