The shining fruits (like beads) are used for making pendants, necklacesetc..besides being used as a resource for food (cereals) and local medicine by the natives of certain places.

Check the work of Neil Duncan (University of Central Florida) and Li Lui (Stanford) -- they have been conducting an archaeological investigation of Job's Tears, although I am not sure if anything is published yet.

I can give you something about the plant. In Dong Han dynasty, Ma yuan(14BC-49AD) conquered JIaozhi( today Vietnam) and took back lots of fruits for resourse of planting because he found the fruits were more bigger than those of China. The fruits can used for food and traditional medicine.Until now, People In China use the seeds for porridge with other components like rice, bean, ect.
