I am so passionate about computer networking. I intend to do more research on it. I have a background in telecommunications. I want to begin researching on a good topic that will be valuable to the world both academically and professionally in the next 50 years.
While I can appreciate the desire to have a meaningful and lasting impact from your PhD work; 50 years is rather ambitious. Just to put it in perspective, Metcalf's invention of Ethernet at PARC was in 1973, (and that was less than 50 years ago) (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Metcalfe). Ethernet today has evolved a long way from Metcal's original work, but it is still widely used.
There are two general approaches here (a) you can look at various technology trends (think Moore's law) and see what others think is likely to be emerging as relevant and then study deeply to find a niche where you can add value. or (b) you can find someone with a real-world problem in computer networking and solve it for them. Approach (a) is very tractable with incremental progress but may not achieve the impact you want. With approach (b) you know the value proposition, but can you solve the problem with the time and resources available?
50 years is a really long time and the world will change considerably even in the 5 years of a typical PhD program.
