You can relate petroleum source rock content (organic matter richness and maturation) to climate change/global warming.

During global warming, polar ice melts i.e., in both hemispheres. Large amounts of water return to the oceans, The sea level rises and spills onto land since the ocean basins are not relatively expanding. Transgression occurs. A lot of nutrients are transported to the oceans. A kind of increase in sea: land ratio. Productivity in the oceans rises. Abundance of organic matter goes with oxygen reduction as need for its consumption by the teeming living and decay processes lead to anoxia. Much deposition of incoming sediments bury these organic matter and low oxygen values lead to their preservation.

Note these take millions of years to accomplish not like your ""millennium goals programmes. That is the importance of fossil, i.e micros-spores, pollen, dinoflagellates, forams, acritarchs, calcareous nannofossils- in petroleum studies.
