The classical teaching methods proven successful in forming the shape of the world we are living now. But, some believe the new changes in the world needs the new methods of teaching, i.e. PBL (Project Based Learning or Problem Based Learning). What do you see in a future of PBL?
Mixed mode learning.
My research found a board game better than a lecture, but only to reinforce previously gained knowledge (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/295910837_Board_game_versus_lecture-based_seminar_in_the_teaching_of_pharmacology_of_antimicrobial_drugs_-_a_randomised_controlled_trial). My follow up study suggests the effect is not seen in the students with little prior knowledge (not yet published). The students expect well prepared lectures, but they seek for practicing the knowledge in an interactive way as well.
I visited Maastricht University a few years ago, The stared with 100% of PBL, but now they do lectures one day a week to supplement PBL. It works better. Maybe Somebody from Maastricht could add to this discussion?
Why the methods proven to be successful decades ago require reformulation? Actually, the change began long ago. In my opinion it is very dynamic progress of the science which makes our world changing rapidly. We need to adjust. We teach our students (third year undergraduate - basic medical pharmacology) not to rely solely on our subject because the new drugs will emerge until they graduate. And the therapeutic pattern may change rapidly. It happened a few years ago in anti-diabetic drugs for instance - with the introduction of incretins/gliptins, glitazones and gliflozins. The students need to know how and where to find a reliable knowledge.
