In fact it is a hidden labor relationship in an inverted way (the worker , or his institution pays the company). I find it unacceptable, though it is the rough truth.
Hudge editorial houses and updated enormous APCs!
Even platforms that used to be free are nowadays applying APCs
Authors provide their articles for free, reviewers do their work for free as well. In practice, only the publishing house has expenses and profits. Polygraphy dominates science)😁
There are many reputable journals where I never published because of APC. Neverthelese, there are still good and excellent alternatives, where one can publish without APC (most of Elsevier and Springer journals). Not sure how it will proceed in future, however press to make all publishing open access and hence with APC, will have the most negative effect on the researchers from the developing countries.
It is my humble submission that Journals that charge Authors to publish on open access are justified especially when some form of consideration is given to Authors from developing countries. But there is no justification for Article Processing Charges where the Articles are sold for profit online or offline. If Articles are sold to generate proceeds, the Journal ought to declare profit to Authors and pay the Authors from profits made. Reviewers and Section Editors should also be paid from the proceeds made due to their immense contribution at the editorial stage. Presently, it is the Editor in Chief and other Employees within the publishing company that get paid. There is little regard for Authors, Section Editors, Guest Editors and Reviewers. This is so wrong. We need a revolution in the academic field.
