Yes, there is a need to guarantee that the invisible other side is actually present there. Teachers may post formative assessment questions in between the live sessions and give them a few minutes to answer them. If it is done on a daily basis, students will be motivated to attend the sessions more actively. unannounced quizzes at the end of the live sessions could also help in this regard.
