I already have a few research papers of my own in this regard, but I am looking for new and currently-in-use mechanisms in addition to the old ones, such as ownership, board, audit, internal control, and market competition.

It is also my research's area.  According to so many papers I have read, Mosaic of Cohen et al. (2004) and paper of Rezaee (2006) as well as Gillan (2006) are still competent for the corporate governance research. Especially, when we combine them as a whole.

However, it should be claimed that the new thing I am working on it is the interaction between components of internal corporate governance mechanism. If my research's results come out as a contribution, maybe in future, we have to highlight the important of particular characteristics of corporate governance mechanism or maybe we have to ignore alternatives to maintain a level of corporate governance effectiveness.

Hopefully, I can share you my results by this year.

This is my area of work as a practitioner.  To the above answers I would add the internal audit function and risk management function as informants to the corporate governance process.  Both are often neglected and their full value not mined to the organization's benefit, partly because the functions themselves do not operate to the best of their capacity.  I have addressed this in various of my publications, with the one attached possibly of most relevance in showing the additional value internal audit can bring if it switches from compliance to error-detection.

How about using some of the criteria applied in the sustainability and integrated financial reporting into the corporate governance arena. The social responsibility element for example may result in employees satisfaction and motivation towards honesty and integrity in performing their work .... affecting the notion of the internal control assessed by both the internal and external auditor

There are a couple of new mechanisms that could be looked into such as Risk Management function indicated by Chris Kelly, and Social Responsibility, referred to by Mohamed Hegazy, which I think could be included under the umbrella of Human Governance.

In this regard, I started recently looking at Human Governance (the slogan of our business school) and I think we need to consider this kind of governance because apparently no matter how strong the corporate governance is, there are still people who have the willingness and ability to violate it.

In the Social Responsibility realm there is an international standard (ISO 26000) on Social Responsible practices for organizations. People have different perspectives of what  is involved in governance and the creation of governance tools involves negotiating with people from different cultural, professional, and regulatory backgrounds.
