Yes, I agreed with your concerns, there is lots of weed that have woody in nature have been generally cause problems to agricultural production. If rootstock having more cellulatic portion that can not be decompose, if they have hemicellulose in their roots or even stems that can be easily decomposable. In my opinion, if such condition is at your research field and irrigation water is available apply some nitrogenous fertilizer and get field submerge for a week or two week. This may decompose the root stock of weeds.
