Please find my wood torrefaction optimization paper enclosed. The carbon produced is suitable for power generation or biochemicals (full blown analysis in the papers). The process does not need external energy and turn the waste wood and other biomass residue to carbon. If you increase the degree of torrefaction you can get activated carbon at the end (it is not in my papers).
