I am going to mount a pair of cameras on a car to provide stereo vision out the front. I am considering attaching them to each side of the windshield looking out the front. Would there be other configurations to consider? I was considering, mounting to hood, roof or front grill/bumper, but there arrangements would all require extra protection from the elements.
Most existing car stereo systems use a stereo system behind the windshield, that's probably the best you can do to start your development. However, do not place the cameras on the sides of the windshield, that's a bad idea: your baseline for stereo matching will be too wide. You'll be blind just in front of the vehicle (no stereo overlap) and will have a hard time finding stereo correspondences (large disparities). You're better of with a system with a baseline between 15cm and 40cm, depending on your camera resolution and field of view of course.
Thanks Geert. After reading your reply, I'm wondering if I need to implement stereo at all. I wish to use the cameras to detect objects (pedestrians, road aritifacts). These detections would need to include their proximity (between 0-30m out) to the vehicle the cameras were mounted in. This is why I'm considering setting them up in stereo fashion. If I do need to still consider stereo, are there articles describing the setting up you described?

Have you look at the KITTI dataset (http://www.cvlibs.net/datasets/kitti)? It has image sequences with stereo cameras as well as a laser scanner, which provides depth information. All the gear was mounted on top of the car's roof.
