Despite the considerable number of evidence-based data about the use of antidepressants in the treatment of bipolar depression, no conclusive evidence has been provided neither in support, not in discharge of antidepressants use for bipolar depression. A number of factors, including methodological and clinical issues may play a role in determing this scenario. Nonetheless, relatively poor attention has been paid to date towards the role of mixed features in course of bipolar depression in determining different outcomes across bipolar depressed patients receiving antidepressant drugs. Also, the much controversial role of antidepressant in the triggering of suicidality solicits further insight on such a sensitive issue.
