Methane is falmable; I should suggest that innovating methane for home and transport use so that it wouldn't ignite by a common gas lighter or spark.
Gas safety; inovating methane gas used at home to not be ignited by common lighters; but rather by dedicated special ignition equipment, in addition to detectors with temperature, CO2, and gas flow sensors; so that if the gas is not ignited it turns off & also when burning or overheating.
This would save a lot of building & houses fires.

It produces carbon dioxide as it is oxidized in the burning process just as propane and butane do. Propane has a higher molecular weight and so does not readily take off into space if it leaks into the atmosphere whereas methane does.

Completely incorrect question and idea. Firstly, you cannot innovate methane. Secondly ignition is not the problem of methane rather the equipment if there is any. Thirdly, I think methane is highly flammable and there is not problem in ignition.
Methane is flammable and is used as fuel for cooking and lighting in millions of households. Even though it has the potential for explosions at concentrations above 5 % in the air, it is used easily without many issues. Safety innovations, if any, should be welcomed.
