I need a heatless monochromic light source suitable for research of photochromic behavior of Azobenzene containing thin films. In this regard, I am looking for UV and visible light sources which I can select a desirable wavelength.One company has offered me to use a 150 W xenon lamp and use filters to have light in UV and Visible region. However, I have seen in articles that different types of lamp have been used for this purpose for example, Mercury lamp as UV and Xenon as visible source . Can a xenon lamp work as a UV and visible source?
It depends upon which wavelengths you need and how much power. Are you looking for near-UV between wavelengths 300 and 400 nm? Based on the SPD in this Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenon_arc_lamp) you may be able to generate sufficient near-UV radiation. If you want something like 200 nm or shorter, you may not be able to get what you need, unless you only need a small amount of radiant power. Mercury lamps emit at specific UV/near-UV wavelengths (405, 365, 254, and in some lamps 185 nm) plus a few visible lines. You can convolve the filter transmittance of a filter with the spectral emission of a lamp to determine the resulting output spectrum.
