I have been going round in circles trying to find the literature search tool in 1.19.8. What is the rationale for removing it in an updated version? It is my most used feature of Mendeley...Maybe I am missing something in the new version
Since the old version keeps showing notification for update, it is really irritating. I find two solutions to work with medeley without literature search bar:
1) We can search for literature using mendeley online, and save all references there and finally sink it with mendeley desktop.
2) We can search for reference on google scholar and save it as bibtex and import to mendeley desktop.
Mendeley Update v1.19.6 is not plugging ms word, if it is possible please help. Although Mendeley Update v1.19.8 is supporting ms-word but it is not having the literature search option
This is complete nonsense. The literature search function was the main reason I moved from RefWorks to Mendeley. Acquiring citations used to take a few seconds, and now it's an onerous task. Thank god I finished my PhD before they pulled this crap. I feel sorry for those having to deal with this in the middle of putting their thesis together.
Tomasz Chmielewski yes, but it is still most useful open source referring software. Hope endnote becomes free and open source. Till then, I prefer saving reference as BibTeX from google scholar and then importing it to Mendeley. I understand it is one extra step, but still very straight forward and time saving.
I asked and complained the company last week and they answered:
"I apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. We appreciate your feedback. The Literature Search has been removed from Mendeley Desktop. A better discovery option is still available through our website https://www.mendeley.com/search/.
I am wondering if using Mendeley is even worth it... Maybe Zotero could be given a chance. Endre Kovács I checked out the link and the search looks nice and all, but I have to sync my desktop library each time before I can actually use the reference on word. Very annoying. Seems like they have no connection to their customers if they think researchers would be happy with that, and with poor customer service...
Mendeley has removed the Literature search from the tool, but you can access them on Mendeley Web. First, Sign in on Mendeley web. Then search the literature then add them to your library by clicking "Add to Library".
After you add to your library on web, click the Sync Button on Mendeley Desktop New version, the article/literature will show in All Documents.
It is faster than the tool. Sometimes Mendeley Desktop tool won't find some article, these problems are being rectified on web.

Aadil Javed you are most welcome. On a different note, every time I open Mendeley, it wants me to update it, and I have to cancel it, which is sometimes annoying.
Update 1 November 2021 - the link to download the previous version of MEndeley doesn't work anymore. At least for Mac. If anyone finds a work around, please share.
Sudharma Banerjee referencing via Mendeley website is very inconvenient, every time you have to refresh the Mendeley page and then have to redo the security check.
Through the app instead, everything was quicker and simpler. It's a matter of fact.
It's so frustrating really! I have sent my feedback through the app and encourage everyone affected by this to do so. I hope that the developers would reconsider bringing back the literature search as it saves tremendous time.
Mohamad Adghim They are not planning to, and by Sept 1, 2022, they are shutting the mendeley desktop down. I can only wish the other apps capitalize on this laxity
Sudharma Banerjee I really wish to know how you find the web approach to be simple and easy as compared to the Desktop approach.
