They just deleted all (20+) of my (public) groups which mean deletion of 5 years of references collected by me and my research group ! Time to move on to something better and more reliable. What are the good freeware reference manager with citation (in MS word) option would you suggest ?

I have used Scribbr (online reference manager). Also, Microsoft edge has a feature called 'collection'. One can save any web page there. It is very handy to manage references and can be synced between devices.

Zotero is the solution. I've always used Zotero because it's the first software I downloaded, and also because I find the interface easier than Mendeley.
Yet, I pay 20$ per year because I exceeded the very limited free storage (20MB). You can avoid this by avoiding saving files. I found out it a later stage, so I'm actually pleased to pay such a low amount for a good software.
