I don't think anyone disputes the fact that there are many antecedent associations with the development of schizophrenia and also many chronological triggers. But those are not fundamental, essential causes.

It might depend on what people mean when they use the term schizophrenia. Certainly, stressors of all sorts aggravate symptoms and bring them to the fore - but that is true for many illnesses.

This is the context of the question, I will try to explain with my limitation of english.

In my country ( a developing country) , many people think that the schizophrenia is an illness, caused by a biological problem, especially the psychiatrist, it means that all is about medication, I understand that some medical problems can generate psychological problems, but those medical problems are identified objectively..with exception of the above , I mean the other case, in which there's no an objective reason to develop it, for those people , will come an admission in psychiatric clinic, there will be usual, as a principal treatment , consume medicaments, psychiatric drugs...Here , people still think that persons with this problem will not be "normal " again. The treatment that they receive from others is inhuman, losing their lives , being victims of exclusion and stigma, their human condition is forgotten after the diagnosis.

When I say that several psychiatrists in my country don´t considering the person, the subjective experience, it's because They still think this problem is caused by a neurochemical disbalance or the genetic, etc..In this order, They ignore and excluded all ideas referent about schizophrenia can be generated for others different reason, personal life, events, trauma, attachment , etc..Several psychiatrists here just think if someone is suffering schizophrenia is because there something wrong with their brain, then They don't care or considering important psychological and social factors to understand what schizophrenia is, so they are not interesting what this people think, or have to say abouts his problems, his feelings, personal models of explanation , They don´t look at their lives , They don't establish a human relationship, They Just ask about medications and no more...The life of this patients matters to few.

Another example that shows how backward we are about these ideas, very few know and conceive the idea that it is possible from cognitive therapy conductual address hallucinations and delusions in people diagnosed with schizophrenia. I know in countries like england some researchers have been working about this long time ago..

I beginning my carrier as a researcher, This is one of my research lines..I know from long time ago in several countries around the world have been huge changes in mental health, services, policies, there have been a lot o discussions about the schizophrenia and others things related with this...I´m knowing all these ideas thanks reading books by Richard Bentall, Jhon Read, Loren Mosher, Johana Moncrief , Jorge Tizón etc..My principal goal is be able to bring those discussion , generate all those changes , in perspectives, paradigms, intervention models , etc to my country..

Your wish to bring more humanity to the treatment of schizophrenia in your country is a very good thing. I'd like to suggest you read Laing's 'Sanity, Madness and the Family' but also the 'Interpersonal Theory of Psychiatry' by Harry Stack Sullivan. There is definitely a need for people who treat mental disorder to think in more human terms. Cuba is a good example of a country where they try to do that.

Schizophrenia

It is a wonderful discussion. I have two examples of early life events linked with psychosis. Investigating a patient's history is usually not considered important in the U.S. So the questions you raise are very important and they do raise questions about the usefulness of the DSM for treatment.

Recent scientists who sympathize with a phenomenological approach offer a much more human view on psychopathology, including schizophrenia, than the neuropsychiatrtically oriented ones do. In my opinion schizophrenia should be removed from the psychiatric code, because it had been misused by a lot of psychiatrists, while their patients had been just suffering from clear PTSD. We had been seeing lots of misdiagnoses that should put psychiatry itself not just psychiatrists in questioning.

If you're strong, have money, and reputation, psychiatrists will diagnose you with PTSD; similar to what happened with Celine Dion after her husband's death.

If not, and you're in conflict with big institutions, and you're weak, have little money; psychiatrists will simply accept receiving bribes (directly or indirectly) from the intended institutions and will diagnose you with schizophrenia to reduce your ability from suing the aforementioned institutions.
