Long term health impact on women in intimate relationship with the partner of her best friend?

I have a few practice clients who have been intimately involved with their female best friend's partner (male) and found it hard to get out after many years. Both have health issues.

I would like to read any articles or research around this topic to pursue in my masters dissertation if there is any research.
