I want to create a webpage in order to promote a scientific work and to share a significant amount of information (approximately 1 TB consisted by RAR files of 10 GB, raster files produced in ARCGIS). What is the best on line service to host the website for free and how can I create links from the website to my computer in order to share rasters, because I do not think that on line hosting sites allow storage and sharing of such big files for free.
Even if dropbox provides a rather huge free quota you might experience that dropbox stops your file sharing through links on big files. I experienced this trying to share a big raster file.
You could sign up for Amazon S3 services (http://aws.amazon.com/es/s3/). It is a commercial option,so it might not be what you want. Uploading files is free. The cost of storing 10 GB per month will be $0,1 (ten cents). Sharing the file one time will cost you $1,2. So if you do not have funding for your sharing this might not work for you.
My solution was to leave my files on an amazon EC2 virtual machine and just pay for whatever transfers was made. The pricing is the same as for S3 mentioned above.
The torrent system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent) might be relevant for you, but using it depends on how much you expect your file to be shared.
One last option could be to chat with one of the institutions involved in the research work and ask for free storage place.
Thank you very much for your responses. My problem is that I have created global rasters of more than 20 climatic parameters related to evapotranspiration in monthly step (x12) with 1x1 km resolution. A good solution would be to convert all my rasters to netcdf files which reduce significanty the size of the files but again the files remain to large even if i convert all my values to integer. So the minimum size of the database can not fall below 500 GB and it is still expanded.
Considering the size of your data I'd go for torrents. Read up on the method and if you find torrents is the way to go, I'd be more than happy to leave my house server providing the file for a couple of months. I only pay for the connection (16 Mbps) and not for what I transfer.
For a long term solution someone should join forces to provide a library of GIS torrents. There used to be one from ER Mapper (geotorrents.org) but it's gone now.
