Hello! I am drafting a paper that looks at the language of cult leaders (forensic linguistics, semantics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics are applicable branches of linguistics). In order to complete the paper, I need to analyze the language of several cult leaders, then compare it to groups that are not cults (various hobby clubs were some tentative ideas I had for a control, but I would need publicly available transcripts of their discourse as well).

My question is "where can I find publicly available copies of discourse/speech transcripts from recognized cult leaders?" I have narrowed my ideas down to Jonestown, Charles Manson, and AUM (cult from Japan). I also decided on NXIVM (Nexium cult), but I found a trove of videos that I can pull transcripts from, so I have at least one resource to review. I have found studies on AUM, Manson, and Jonestown, but relatively little audio or written records of speeches. Jonestown has some sermons online, that I am aware of, but I cannot find Manson or AUM transcripts.

If anyone has knowledge of where to find transcripts of cult leaders' speeches or discourse, I would love to connect! My main requirement is that the criminal justice field labeled a group to be a cult; I am open to other cult transcripts that are not from one of the aforementioned groups! I am looking to see if there are underlying language traits or discourse patterns used by cult leaders on their followers. I have a barebones draft, minus parts of the literature review, and limited in data, at the moment.

I am slated to teach a course at a CSU in fall, but at the moment I do not have access to academic databases for free, so i am specifically looking for free or low-cost access to transcripts, videos, or audio recordings of recognized cults.

My background includes a Master's degree in linguistics from CSU Fresno, as well as independent studies in the fields of forensic linguistics, discourse analysis, and the usage of CLAN software. I published my thesis in 2015 on the topic of sociolinguistic agreement in the Khmer language (from Cambodia). You are welcome to read it, as it is uploaded for free online.

Thank you for your time! Feel free to send me a DM!

Gratefully,

Ms. Maya Flores
