which algorithm or method can be considered as a good start for LiDAR data classification? LiDAR data is of urban scene only. Suggestions needed.

Yes there are different methods I suggest that you read the following paper which describes all steps of LIDAR processing and classification based on fusion of LIDAR with optic image. It is about urban features classification. It also includes the name of software used in the LIDAR data processing.

I suggest you to use Self Organizing Maps (SOMs) or Support Vector Machines (SVMs)
Both of them are useful. If you have huge datasets it's better to use Rapidminer software with K-means Algorithm.
