I have a carbon-based polymer, it has a strong Photoluminescence (PL). I have tried to collect the Raman spectra for this sample (~25 micormeter thickness) with low power ~5 mW. I could not see any Raman peaks. Increase the incident power to higher leads to the sample damage (I can see the color changes from white to black). I take a small chunk of sample on a cleaned glass slide, and increase the power to ~25mW, I can clearly see the strong Raman peaks, and the sample seems not to be damaged. Can someone explain to me what's the reason for this?

I can't figure out what is the standard way of measuring Raman spectra. When you observe damage above 5mW, you are talking about a large piece of your polymer without any substrate? If the substrate makes so much difference then it must be something about heat dissipation - glass probably cools the polymer
The effect is a combination of heat dissipation, large heat capacity and mass of the glass slide and lower absorbance of the Laser by the glass slide.
What kind of Laser do you use?

Thanks for the response.This makes sense. The sample on the glass slide could not absorbs the energy from the laser completely. The polymer sample was synthesized under high pressure by using a diamond anvil cell. After released the pressure to the ambient pressure, we got product sticks to the gasket hole. I just used the laser goes through the sample, no substrate.
