I'm hugely keen to continue my research. The obvious way to do that is through another degree, though it's the research that matters to me not the degree. Hopefully, something will work through, but I'm having problems with doctoral costs, surprisingly high in Thailand.
I'd like to be in a comfort zone, come what may.
Remembering that it's the research that matters to me, not a degree, I would be happy to just continue the research off my own bat. However, that leads to the question of affiliation in respect of journal publication and conference papers.
Is anybody aware of a workaround for this issue, including if I joined a non-doctoral, cheaper, course, to be in attendance at a particular University?

Hello Mark - I am not aware of a relationship that will simply allow you to use a university name.
Some universities have visiting scholar arrangements where you can pay to use facilities and access academic expertise.
Another option is to seek a honorary visiting position at a university (e.g. visiting lecturer, adjunct professor).
For either of these cases there needs to be a clear mutually beneficial relationship as the university administrators are essentially allowing someone to use their brand reputation for free.
I suggest trying to build relationships at universities or even consider initiating new networks. As I say, however, there will need to be mutual gain however.

Good point on visiting scholar arrangements. I am not quite sure why I didn't remember that, though suspect it's simply because such arrangements aren't big here in Thailand.
That said, within the Asia-Pacific region, there is some pressure toward that approach in China, where I have connections.
It also puts me thinking that maybe I should be looking to a couple of Italian and US Universities in that my work is a direct descendent, albeit, of course, with clear developments, of work conducted in them.
Finally, there's Australia, where the research would continue to be conducted.
Many thanks, Tony, for the memory-jog, the crazy thing being that a friend had such an arrangement with a UK University for many years, with them benefitting from some first-rate research and the odd lecture, him from a first-rate branding.
All to be borne in mind, though, for the time I continue to battle here. Thailand is brilliant for not charging foreign students extra, other than related to actual costs, but has, assuredly, not been immune from Business Administration, as an area, being seen as a cash-cow, including the spin-off of self-supporting college structures from parent Universities.
You shouldn't need an affiliation with a university to conduct research (though you should still adhere to ethical guidelines) or publish and the better journals will not ask you to have one unless they are not convinced by your manuscript or the data that backs it up. If a journal is asking you for your affiliations, ask them why the feel it is necessary. There are plenty of independent researchers out there that are not associated with scientific institutions and they are publishing good scientific work.
Thanks, John. Certainly you are correct. Again, I have a friend who functions without affiliation, but I've always wondered if that has acted as a limitation in that publishing seems so processual, initially so tick-box. My worry has been that if you don't tick the affiliation box would you proceed to, for instance peer review? My friend has been established a very long time, with the process, in my view, having become ever more tick-box, against which he, personally, may have gained immunity.
