Bottom up synthetic approaches produce a whole range of sizes form atom cluster to nano and micro-particles. The question in the case of atomic clusters is how to keep the separated? The smaller the perticles the higher their reactivity therefore they will either aggergate to produce nano or micro-particles or they will reacti with other molecules in their environment. Sub-nano atomic clusters may exist gasphase for very short time periods, so they can be detected e.g. by mass spectrometry. It is very hard to define the limit between sub-nano particles and molecules. For that matter macromolecles as proteins or DNA are molecules on nano (or even sub-nano) particles? Molecules are relatively stable and the have no dangling bonds. Very small atomic clusters contain many dangling bodns, therefore they will be extremely unstable.
