I have read many papers on isolation improvement on MIMO antennas in the 4G and 5G bands.
What is the acceptable S21 isolation level?
I have seen antennas at -20dB before isolation improvement and about -50--70 dB isolation level after coupling reduction.
Recently, one of my papers was rejected because the reviewer said that I already have good isolation for my MIMO antenna (around -18 dB)

It is required that spatial multiplexing antennas be completely decoupled. This is an ideal condition. The practical condition is that some coupling is allowed with certain upper bound.
Assume that we have a system with antennas with transmit power S1 and S2.
Assume that the leakage power from S2 at S1 due to coupling is Sc,
Then the S/ interference power at the antenna site S1. will be Sc/S1. The signal to interference in dBs will be:
S/ I = 10 log S1/Sc
So, Sc is a system requirement in the sense that S/I must be greater equal than certain upper value.
So, it can be considered as design parameter such that the over all budget of the noise +plus the interference must be such that overall S/N+I at the receiver must be greater than certain limit determined by the channel condition.
One can make the Interference due to coupling much less than the I and N at the channel.

Minimum - 20dB recommended, more than - 20dB with high gain and high efficiency recommended
