I would like to know whether there is any way by means of which there is any possibility to measure industry regulations for Indian firms? I need to analyse certain impact on firms based on industry regulations.
sorry..i had no idea that this qs is nonsense...i actually wanted to know whether there is any indicator on any database that distinguish high regulated industries from others.....for eg banking industry as we know operates in a highly regulated environment. Likewise if there is any indicator variable....just indicating whether this is high, medium or low regulated industry. I am a young researcher...and as a result different kinds of questions come to our mind.....which may be weird at times....but this is how we probably learn i guess
But you also need to pay some attention to whether those regulations are actually enforced. Can you get data on enforcement budgets, enforcement actions, settlements, fines, etc?
It all depends on the subject matter under study. Most of the time researchers do make use of ''Dummy'' i.e. turning the variable into a dummy variable where for example if a company follows the regulations, you code the answer of respondents YES as 1 and 0 if otherwise. In addition, you can identify sub-variables within the subject of study i.e various areas covered by industry regulations and you do the same as above. To obtain information about compliance or non-compliance on regulations always goes with coding system of either 1 or 0 for answers by respondents and hence a qualitative data which must be turned into quantitative data for proper and extensive analysis. Depending on how you set questions in your questionnaire, you may even structure answers from respondents into No/Low Compliance and High Compliance having established criteria for how you will categorize the answers and reasonable conclusion can be made about whether firms with high compliance perform better than those with No/Low compliance or otherwise.
Industry regulations are mapped to some extent in the World Bank Doing Business reports, including Economic Freedom Index etc. India had recently published its 340 point parameters for Business reforms. You could check into the regulatory aspects in that.
