Most of versions of ns2 require path setting that is bit complicate process for learners. It also consumes time and sometime gives errors in installation. How to use very shortest way to install without waste of extra time?
No path settings are required for ns-2 installation. However after installation you need to specify the path in .profile/.bash_profile file to make it accessible anywhere
Many systems require that you set the environment LD_LIBRARY_PATH to specify where to look for shared libraries. If you don't use terminal for installing NS-2, you must set the PATH environment.
You are right, installation process is a bit complicate for beginner learners.
If you use microsoft windows operating system, you may install ns-2 to a linux based operating system with using virtualization software like virtualbox etc. Then you will distribute your linux with ns-2 installed image file to the learners. So they can only attach this image file to their personal computer and try to learn ns-2 with no waste of time for ns-2 installing process.
For example: Prof. Shambhu Upadhyaya uses virtualbox and NS2 simulator in CSE561 Wireless Networks Course / Spring 2014 in University of Buffalo.
