The conventional way of counting tracks in a CR-39 SSNTD involves tedious microscopic (optical / SEM / TEM /AFM) investigations and counting of etched tracks. Can any simple optical, may be using diffraction, method can be used to identify and count the number of tracks in a given area of CR-39 ?

CR-39 is Solid State Nuclear Track Detector. Holography looks a promising option but is there any report on this aspect ?
Yes, we have done something similar, but you have to be very careful that you are operating in a regime that has linear scattering, as when the tracks overlap you quickly get into an nonlinear regime, where scattering actually decreases. The etch protocol is extremely important, and should be calibrated to the laser light. This method will likely give you large variance when counts are low.
