I know Mn2+ is stable and bio-available for plants, but what if only Mn4+ is available for plants in the environment? Is there any way that plants can transform Mn4+ into Mn2+? or Plants can utilize Mn4+ as they are? Thank you!
Mn4+ is insoluble (inert) in soil and plants cannot utilize it. Plants cannot transform it but environmental factors can transform it into Mn2+ and then plants can utilize. Factors like, good soil aeration and neutral or alkaline pH usually favours the prevalence of Mn4+. However when the soil is humid or waterlogged and soil oxygen is poor, Mn4+ is reduced to Mn2+.
