Smartphones have the advantage of being small, easy to use, affordable, and connected and of including an inertial motion unit (IMU) composed of 3D accelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope almost as standard (only one of gyroscopes or magnetometers can be absent). Interestingly, these built-in inertial sensors allow detecting and monitoring both linear and angular movements of the phone. To provide this range of motion, fusion algorithms can be used and some of them have already been validated in several studies.
