My colleagues an I are preparing a paper on changes in the amount of tree or shrub lines in a region in Poland. Surprisingly, although one can find the opinion on this habitat type loss in many websites or in the scientific papers, too, I can not find recent data on this process. Do you know such official statistics or papers, that describe this hedgerow/tree lines loss in Europe in current century?
For the UK: hedgerow statistics feature in "Countryside Survey" published at various times since the late 1970s or 1980s. You should be able to find this easily online. I think the most recent was based on data late in the decade 2000-2010.
Thank you. Indeed, UK seems to be exceptional, when considering monitoring of land-use changes in the countryside. The decline of linear structures is going on, I see, but more slowly, than earlier. I knew the earlier assessments, published in books, too. Excellent and very valuable. But what about other countries?

I used to be very active in hedge research but over the last 10 years or so this has been limited by other interests. There used to be active researchers in France, but not I think at a national scale.

suggests that there are some statistics for EU countries but I don't know if there are any estimates of change. Sorry. Tim
I think in European part of Russia - Tree-line and similar lesopolosy variant (along road, along railway) increase in last year. But tree-line in agrolandscape decrease because a lot of this variant now very old stand and so in recent period was catching without change on young). But in all, area of this in Russia stable.
