Is there any paper about the relationship between collective memory and rumor?

I'm working on this question especially in Late Roman Republic and Augustus' Principate. I'm looking for a general or specific bibliography about it.

Seems to me that neither the rumour or the collective memory are necessarily producers or conductors of bad or good news, since we can find either good or bad news transmitted by the rumour or the collective memory. Maybe the difference between both will be the time and the reach, i. e., while the rumour has a brief duration and its circulation is more restrict, the collective memory instead is more lasting and comprehensive.
