I don't know many software where you can place landmarks inside of a structure (I presume you mean inside of cavities). One option is the EVAN toolbox (although not freely available), which also offers the option for semilandmark placing. The software Landmark (http://graphics.idav.ucdavis.edu/research/EvoMorph) is available for free download and allows to place semilandmarks. It doesn't offer the option to place internal landmarks (unless I am not aware of it), but you could generate surface files from the internal structure (like a cast) using Avizo, and then use that to place landmarks. Of course, you need to first evaluateif this a suitable solution for your sample.

I've been using a beta version of Morphome3cs, you can place landmarks inside volume data. It's the only programm I know of that can work with volume data instead of surfaces. You would have to contact the project supervisors (http://cgg.mff.cuni.cz/trac/morpho/wiki/ProjectMembers). Good luck, Laurence

Do you need actual, or computer generated landmarks. The landmarks we use are required for superimpositions of serial volumetric radiographs. this is somewhat different to the landmarks required for studies in physical anthropology. Have you tried Anatomage?

You can also try MorphoJ (http://www.flywings.org.uk/MorphoJ_page.htm) and the various packages available from James Rohlf's website (http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/ee/rohlf/software.html).

MorphoJ will allow you to do analyses but not for digitising. For digitising 3D models, externally and internally you can use IDAV Landmark http://www.idav.ucdavis.edu/research/EvoMorph

Hi Stefan. The best software for doing that is called TINA Landmarking Tool. It is pretty cool 'cause for placing landmarks you use the cross-sections of the structure (though you can also use the 3D volume) and therefore you can place landmarks in literally every place (internal or external). Besides that, it gives you the possibility of extreme accuracy. I work with mouse skulls and use that software for placing my 3D landmarks. I developped ISE-MeshTools exactly for that purpose .

ISE-MeshTools is opensource ( https://github.com/morphomuseum/ISE-MeshTools ).

You may place landmarks and semi-landmarks on surfaces and displace them manually out of the surface : for instance at the centres of foramina.

I actually wrote the IDAV Landmark Editor software (mentioned above) when I was a post doc at UC Davis. Since leaving UC Davis and starting a company some ten years ago, called Stratovan, we created what I consider to be the next version of Landmark called Stratovan Checkpoint. The Landmark software is no longer maintained by UC Davis and I would encourage you to give Checkpoint a try as it can do nearly everything that Landmark can do and much much more.
