Compressors transfers energy to the flow. we have two major types or air compressors in aviation industry. a.) Axial Compressor b.) Centrifugal compressor. The former has air outlet parallel to the axis and in the later, its perpendicular. Is there any mixed flow compressor in existence? how successful was it? and what are their problems?
By mixed flow compressor i mean the outlet air direction is at an anlge to the axis ( angle not equal to 90 degree)

Mixed flow compressor wheel can be kind of clipped at exducer. Clipping is the technique of cutting away some of the material on the fins of the impeller wheel of the turbocharger. In other words, to 'clip' a turbo is to make the fins in the exhaust path smaller. The cut is usually done at an angle of between 10 and 20 degrees - the bigger the angle, the more material is removed from the fins

Thank you very much Chandran Jayamurugan, You have added information and a new dimension to the discussion. I didn't expect they would actually do this on turbo-chagers (TC). Yes, as you said clipping could reduce the rational inertia of the rotor thus enabling it to give better response to the engine throttle. But, as clipping brings in reduction in work-done (pressure ratio) at a given RPM, TC would produce less pressure ratio for the engine in its designed condition. So i guess, for this the TC - Engine matching has to be modified..
Hoping to discuss more with you all in future. It would also be better if you can add few more points to the discussion.
If you know how to use a Cordier Chart then you may be able to find the operating and geometrical for mixed flow compressors
