I am trying to do an experimental research on teaching functional arithmetic skills to mild-moderate mentally retarded children with the use of simple board games. can anyone help me out in this regard with suitable design?
Wow! For the second time in two days this very same phrase "mentally retarded children" has come up in reguards to math. I will say again this phrase is so repugnent to what I philosophicaly belive teaching entails and teachers are. To discribe children in this maor is so repulsive, degrading, marginalizing, and has such a history to it I simply cannot understand its use as a descripter of any child. It was not so long ago we throw these children into mental wards and threw away the key.
I was also told that this (researchgate) is where researchers come to discuss and ask questions about issues regarding research and recieve feedback from other researchers and not a Church. To... with that notion. We are educaters and as such we set the standard in which the children are described and this phrase must be challenged at every moment of everyday of every year. To place retarded and children in the same sentence is bad enough but to claim a child is mentally retarded is simply unexcusable and a sign of not mearly insenseativity but an act of malicious intent. It is an intellectual micro aggresion of the most grevious kind (see Chester M Pierce).
I can help from the standpoint that phrases such as these need to be self reflected upon. First where and when did it enter the consciousness (2) what was the setting and how was it used (I am certain is was not used as a term of enderment) (3) when did this phrase become morally acceptable and morally justified to use, (4) stop it.
See researchgate Q&A for the exchange between myself and others regarding curriculum and as the question has been changed to mental disabilities before it was mental retardation.
