I think that teaching style is more important than gender so the correlation is between the learning style of learners and the teaching style of the teacher.  Accoring to me the gender is not so important. Ines

Ines: that is an empirical question. Either way, even if teaching style has a bigger effect, that doesn't mean people can't study the effect of gender as well; the whole point of science is to identify effects of theoretical interest even though there may be other things in the world that have a bigger effect. For example, men and women (in the aggregate) have a difference in height, even though the height differences between adults and children are bigger; I wouldn't go up to someone who is interested in studying gender differences in height and say "Well, there rare bigger differences between adults and children, so you should study that instead". A statement like "the correlation is between the learning style of the learners and the teaching style of the teachers" doesn't make much sense, because it's never the case that there is only one correlation. It is perfectly possible, and likely, that student outcomes are affected by multiple factors; there may be effects of factors that you are interested and there may at the same time be separate effects of other factors, such as the ones Dr. Hess is interested in.

Perhaps it can depend on the school subject being taught by the female teachers. Here is a study from my research area:

This is only anecdotal information. I have found that in technical male dominated courses, having a female teacher that encourages females helps females be more confident and successful than in a male lead class. Again this is only anecdotal and from only what I have observed. It would be an interesting topic for further research.

I would be very curious to know what research has been done on this subject.  The effect of male role models dates back to Plato and Socrates, but what about female scholars?  Who inspired them and how did it impact their performance?

Fran Hess,you are working on very interesting research area.Many thinkers has given their positive views about the female education .i think,today,' correlation between female student success and being taught by female teachers' this is depend upon culture and context of research place.How female students response to female teacher and how female students response to male teacher it is thinkable.I am also curious to know this correlation.
