I am looking for a way to calculate length of growing season in alpine regions.
It's clear thats the amount of days between start and end of growing season but how to define those?
What I found so far is from Zhang et al. (2011) - for information: I shortened the table a bit.
But I think that 6 consecutive days above 5°C in high alpine (2400m is the highest research site) is not necessarily meaning "no snow-cover" and/or start of growing season.

I don't know much about the length of the growing season but to analyse the snow cover area you can use the MODIS snow cover information which could probably tell you how much area is covered with snow on daily basis. Moreover by the snow cover depletion curves you can analyse when snow is fading away in the area and then you can develop a relationship with temperature over several years. I hope this would be helpful for you.

It seems as though growing degree days would work still if soil is not frozen which snow could actually reduce.

To get you right Kurt, Growing Degree Days as the sum of the "Integral Area" of days where daily mean Temperature exceeds a given threshold (i.e. 5°C for small statured Plants accoridng to Körner -2017) - and this sort of incorporated in the approach of Zheng with 6 consecutive Growing Degree days?
