I'm wading into the unfamiliar area of bibliometrics at the moment.

I'm conducting a study of terminology over the last few decades, and want to account for article impact. A quick and dirty way would be to look at the number of citations, however I'm concerned about the correlation of citation and age. for example, I would not expect a 20-year-old paper with 10 cites to have the same impact as a 5-year-old paper with the same number of cites. Instinctively, I would simply divide cites by age, but would prefer to have some support for my method.

Additionally, I know there are services out there that catalog use beyond citation, but keep in mind I'm going back to the 1980s or earlier.
