Is there a validated tool that can be used to assess motivation for engaging in addiction treatment? Something that could be administered pre-post intervention.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has a booklet out on enhancing motivation. They have a chapter on measuring motivation; The book is free. Check it out:
I don't mean to be facetious Tess, but I've always found the best indicator of motivation to seek/engage in treatment is bums on seats. Attendance is an ongoing issue in addictions, as evidenced by the fact that I am writing this while waiting (in vain it seems) for some group participants to arrive... (Small towns are tough!)
Having said that, it's gotta be tough to nail down extraneous variables when trying to measure motivation. Where is it, what type of treatment, what substance, life circumstances, etc, etc. In the end, do they turn up for treatment or make excuse after excuse??
